Wellness Retreat Guide: Booking Your Perfect Retreat in Finland and Beyond

When life feels overwhelming and the internal noise grows too loud, I find myself longing for a place of calm.

I love the city life and its conveniences, such as public transportation, museums, libraries, restaurants offering diverse cuisines, shops, and other everyday comforts.

However, when the noise is too loud – whether from self-doubt, external criticisms, micro-stresses of life, or just the hectic pace of everything around me, I look to a place where the air is crisp, the forests offer subtle silence, and the water invites quiet reflection.

To me, stepping into nature offers a sanctuary for my senses. Booking a retreat, whether in the Finnish forests or another part of the world, is more than just a trip; it is a gentle invitation to slow down, breathe deeply, and reconnect with yourself.

Discovering the Essence of a True Wellness Retreat

What attracted me to Finland when I moved here three years ago is that it's a a land of pristine nature and serene landscapes. I remember commenting to a local Finn that most countries put parks in cities, but Finland has somehow managed to build cities in a giant park.

It should be no surprise then, that Finland's wellness retreats are designed to harmonize with this environment and offer experiences that nurture your body, mind, and spirit.

Imagine waking up to the scent of pine and fresh earth, and feeling a cool morning breeze. Whether under the northern sun of Finland or tucked away in a quiet mountain range elsewhere, this connection to nature is the essence of a true wellbeing retreat.

Many Finnish retreats focus on mindfulness, yoga, and traditional practices like sauna. The sauna is not just a place to sweat; it is a ritual of cleansing and renewal. Honestly, I thought it would get old after a while – that is until I tried cold plunges in the winter. Let me tell you, it is addictive. The repetition of contrast between heat and extreme cold against my body was nothing short of exhilarating. It's a surefire way to awaken every sense in your body.

When you choose a retreat, look for those that emphasize slow travel and sensory immersion. These experiences encourage you to savor each moment, whether it’s a mindful walk through the forest or a quiet meditation by a serene lake. Attend a retreat that can help you shed the weight of daily stress and rediscover your inner calm.

Planning Your Journey: Practical Tips for Booking Your Wellness Retreat

Booking your perfect wellbeing retreat in Finland requires thoughtful planning. Here are some practical steps to guide you:

  1. Choose the Right Season

Finland’s seasons offer unique experiences. Winter invites you to embrace the dark silence and the magic of the northern lights (in certain places, though not in the south). Summer brings endless daylight and lush green forests. Consider what atmosphere calls to you most. You can't decide? Try both!

  2. Select a Retreat That Resonates With You

Some retreats focus on yoga and meditation, others on nature therapy or spa treatments. Reflect on what you need most . Is it rest? Inspiration? Self-reconnection? Or a simply extended time away and offline? If you're having a difficult time deciding, ask yourself what you can do more easily in Finland that you can't do elsewhere.

  3. Consider Location and Accessibility

Many retreats are nestled in remote areas, perfect for disconnecting. However, check transportation options and travel times to ensure your journey is smooth and stress-free. Traveling another five hours after a long flight might not be the most relaxing way to start a retreat, unless of course, you are looking for extended silence of a long car ride.

  4. Look for Small Group or Private Experiences

Intimate settings foster deeper connection and personal attention. It's easier to embrace the experience with a smaller group, which can enhance your sense of safety and comfort.

  5. Check What’s Included in the Price

We get it. Most of us don't have an unlimited resource. Meals, activities, and wellness treatments vary. Family-style vs. five-course meals. Some retreats offer shared sleeping arrangement of three to five to a room, while others offer a luxurious accommodation. Some include guided forest walks or cultural experiences while others have only one or two group activities with mostly free time in between. These differences affect the price of the retreat. Know before you go what's important to you and what's included in the package.

  6. Prepare for the Climate

Pack layers, comfortable shoes, and swimwear for sauna and lake dips. The Finnish climate can be crisp, even in summer.

Embracing the Senses: What to Expect During Your Time with Five Senses Retreats

Five Senses Retreats is a feast for the senses. As each day unfolds, we gently invite you to engage with your surroundings at your own pace. Nothing is required. Everything is optional. We strongly believe that a retreat cannot be forced, though sometimes a gentle nudge from a facilitator can be helpful.

  • Sight: In Finland, expect the soft hues of the forest, shimmering lakes, and endless skies. Elsewhere, it could be a bright orange sunset in a quiet desert or whitewater rushing through a great canyon.

  • Sound: True quiet is golden. The rustle of leaves, the call of birds, and the gentle lapping of water replace the usual urban clamor, no matter where in the world we are.

  • Touch: Feel the warmth of the sauna floor, the coolness of lake water, or the texture of moss underneath your feet. These tactile experiences are designed to ground you in the present.

  • Smell: The fresh scent of pine, wildflowers, and clean water fills the air, refreshing your mind. There's also the aroma of a delicious meal cooked over a fire.

  • Taste: Enjoy wholesome, nourishing meals made from local ingredients. Each bite will connect you to nature and its rhythm.

Our retreats incorporate sensory mindfulness exercises, encouraging you to slow down and savor these moments. In the future, we plan to venture outside of Finland and explore these sensory experiences according to the unique offerings of the destination—a temple in the mountains of Korea, an organic goji berry farm in Southern Europe, or a remote ranch in New Mexico.

Nurturing Your Well-Being Beyond the Retreat

The true gift of a wellbeing retreat is the lasting change it brings to your life. As you return to the normal rhythms of life, you can carry with you a renewed sense of calm and clarity.

I know – it's very hard. But remember that change isn't about willpower and it's almost never instant. Here are some gentle ways to nurture yourself after a retreat:

  • Create a Daily Pause: Even a minute of mindful breathing or stretching can center you. If you're feeling too restless to do this, as I often do, go for a brisk walk and breathe in and out to fill and then empty your lungs.

  • Stay Connected to Nature: It can be as simple as watching the sky while drinking a cup of hot tea or coffee. Now that it's not so cold out, I have found myself sitting on a bench and just staring at the open sky as a way to reset after a particularly hard day.

  • Practice Gratitude: Reflect on moments of peace and joy, no matter how small. I heard a special forces military veteran say that his superior would often say after a very intense day of training: "Good." Simply "good" that they were alive and healthy to face another day. Yes, even when things are bad – good.

  • Maintain Your Rituals: Adapt sauna sessions, journaling, or herbal teas to your home environment. It doesn't even need to be something quiet – at least from the outside. I have a unique ritual and it's called Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. When I was younger and competing in sports, my sole purpose was to not only win but dominate. I don't do BJJ to dominate; I started too late for that. But it's difficult to think about anything else when I am rolling on the mats. All my worries and concerns disappear when I am on the mats. It helps me to empty my mind and cut out the noise.

Remember, wellness is a journey, not a destination. Your retreat is a beautiful chapter in this ongoing story.

Booking your perfect wellness retreat, whether in Finland or elsewhere, is an invitation to step away from the rush and rediscover the peace and strength within.

When you are ready to embrace this journey, you can join us at Five Senses Retreats and begin your path to rest, inspiration, and self-reconnection.
