The Weight of a Page: Hand-Binding the Booklets for The Sun & Light

There is a mental shift that happens when a concept on a screen becomes a physical reality. Today, in my hands, that shift sounded like the crisp snap of heavy paper and the rhythmic pull of wool thread. I hand-bound the custom retreat guides for our upcoming Sun & Light Retreat.

Each booklet was bound piece by piece, page by page.

As the needle pierced the spine of each guide, my mind was not only on the materials, but also on the physical journey each retreat guest would be making. Moreover, I’ve been thinking about what it means for someone to pack their bags, leave what is familiar, and trust this landscape with their exhaustion.

Leaving Things Behind

Slow travel is more than just a slower itinerary; it is a physical and psychological transition. A retreat doesn't begin when you step into the forest; it begins the moment you close your suitcase at home.

As I hold these completed booklets in my hands, I am deeply aware of the unique stories attached to each one. Many of our guests are traveling from incredibly far away to be here. They are boarding flights, crossing oceans, navigating time zones, and leaving behind demanding professional roles, bustling concrete cities, and the heavy mental load of running a household.

To travel to the Nordic wilderness in the summer is a deliberate choice to seek out the edges of the world.

My quiet hope for every guest holding these guides is that the physical journey acts as a filter. With every mile crossed, may another layer of noise fall away. By the time you arrive where the trees meet the open sky, your busy mind will have taken a back seat, leaving you ready to explore yourself and the surrounding nature.
